Replace your Camry’s Spark Plugs

The spark plugs can be found in the internal combustion engine and produce the spark that is required to ignite the fuel which powers the vehicle. Platinum tipped Camry plugs should be switched out approximately every 60,000 miles. Keep in mind, the back three plugs on the V6 engine can be difficult to reach. A socket-extension will help you get to them. If you are unsure what spark plugs to purchase, you can ask an auto parts store representative or consult a Toyota Dealer maintenance technician.
Removing old spark plugs
1. You should always unhook the negative cable on the battery anytime you are using metal tools under the hood that may come into contact with the battery and cause a spark.
2. Remove the ignition coil from the cylinder head with a torque wrench.
3. Twist the spark plug wire boot loose, pull it off and inspect it for damage.
4. Use compressed air to blow into the spark plug well. This will clear out the contaminants that may be down in there. Vacuuming out the well or simply brush away any loose debris.
5. Insert spark plug socket, attach, and turn counter-clockwise to remove.
Installing new spark plugs
1. Use a feeler gauge tool to adjust the gap on the plug to .043 inches.
2. Hand-thread the plug or use a standard socket. Do not use a plug socket. It will grip the plug and you will not be able to remove it without taking the plug back out.
3. Spark plugs should be tightened to 11 ft-lbs for existing cylinder heads.
4. Replace the spark plug boot. You should hear a click when it is properly attached. Gently pull to make sure that it is in fact on there.
5. Repeat these steps for all of the other spark plugs.
6. Finally, reconnect the battery cable.
